Getting to know your island

Colombia was once a colony of Spain and followed Spanish rule. Up until 1991, when Colombia became a republic. They work just like the american government, they have three branches. There are 32 departments that are split up from the capital ( Bogota). In the late 1920s Colombia depended on their exports for money. These things included coffee, petroleum, and bananas and they bring in great amounts of money for the country. Soon enough during the worldwide great depression they lost money and the economy collapsed. ( Britannica, Government and social conditions)

Colombian culture is mixed with african and spanish descent. Colombians love to celebrate and their folkloric festivals and carnivals. These are usually multiple days celebrations that include colorful parades and many different  costumes. All local artists and local food also come out to participate. The most famous Carnival of Colombian must be the Carnival of Barranquilla. It was even declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003.This festival is a three days and is right before the Catholic fasting period starts. Mainly Everyone dresses up in colorful and exotic costumes. These people  take part in a grand parade through the streets showing off how amazing their work is. Every year a queen is chosen by the locals. During holy week the locals and performers reenact the death of jesus.

The group of Spaniards that first came to the New World were mainly Roman Catholic clergy. The clergy were appointed by and represented the crown in the colonies. The clergy sought to save  the native Indians by giving their life to god. plus In addition they started the   process of acquiring land and wealth for the church. The others who came sought out to make themselves rich and not give anything to anyone especially the church.( Motherearthtravel, history of colombia)

  1. I want to start off by saying I love that you add so much detail to your post. I never knew that Columbian culture is mixed with the African desent. I think that is is very cool that the island is still able to survive from the same style export since the 20's considering that many islands have changed the items they export multiple times. Overall I enjoyed your post. It taught me so much about your Island that I did not know.
