History and politics of Colombia
Many times have , colonists and explorers have travelled to the west indies. Traveling here they were looking for things to make them rich. The native colombians lived by fishing, hunting and farming. In 1500 Spain landed in Colombia but the first settlement wasn't for another 30 years around when Cartagena and Santa Marta were founded. In the 1560s Colombia was made a place for The African slaves who were taken there. The african slaves were mainly used as miners as wells as the natives. With a struggle of power in Spain Colombia declared independence. Soon enough The Spanish re-conquered the area in 1815. Simon Bolivar defeated the Spanish and formed and a new nation was formed consisting of Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Ecuador. They called themselves the great republic of colombia. Colombia was a troubled country with no stable government and eight civil wars took place during the 19th century. Eventually Colombia went deeper into politics which caused the country to dig itself deeper in a hole. There were two political parties, one party who were conservitive and another who wanted to represent the church and landowners. These political parties went to war called to the thousands days war.
War of the Thousand Days was the last of Colombia's nineteenth-century civil wars. On 18 October 1899, Liberals rose in revolt against the Conservative regime in power. Much war spread through the country. The Liberals failed to capitalize on their early victory at Peralonso. This place was a major place for the government to take back control. At the battle of Palonegro (11-25 May 1900) the government led the Liberals in the largest battle in contemporary
South American history. By the early 1900s the warring factions, and the country itself were done.the liberals on the other hand were more desperate after they failed to win support. They tried in Colombia and in neighboring countries. The ending result had the conservatives win the war ( modern day government of Colombia) and Panama left from Colombia.Colombian politics is backed by violence. The people decided to use arms to resolve political differences. In the early 1990s governmental leaders were killed by citizens or assassins. In the modern area of this country's politics backed by violence Colombia had to make a new constitution to resolve political diffrences.it didn't resolve much as drug and gang groups came into play.Drug lords had come to replace guerrilla leaders as the main threat to political and social stability. Even though today Colombia is a democratic republic with three branches, economics play a big part in what makes colombian politics.
